The board

Lead-lined drywall is fabricated in our Gibsonton plant using high-quality Type X drywall and sheet lead from 2 lb (1/32″, 0.794 mm) to 8 lb (1/8″, 3.175 mm) as backing. We recommend any lead thickness over 1/8″ be backed on plywood instead. Usual and customary lead heights run to 7′, and we can fabricate full-height lengths of 8′ or 10′.

  • Drywall in 8′ or 10′ lengths, 5/8″ or 1/2″ thick. 12′ lengths are not produced because of the breakage risk.
  • Pricing includes one 2″-wide lead batten strip, the length of the lead height, with every unit.
  • Lead meets Fed. Spec. QQ-L-201F, Grade C, 99.9% pure.
  • 50 lead screw-cover discs per panel included. They may not be required under NCRP Report 147, but you will have them.

All lead drywall is not the same

If your project includes X-ray rooms for physician offices or hospitals, you should be concerned with the quality of the lead board you buy. If you are not concerned, it will cost you money. 1970 is the year A-fabco began supplying radiation shielding products, and we have tried ever since to tune in to what installers actually run into. Here is what we found, and what we did about it.

The problemDirty lead board means extra work for installers. Some board is so dirty it has to be hard-coated, because lead oxide rubs off during manufacture and shipping.
The A-fabco fixWe manufacture and stack the board lead-to-lead and face-to-face, so the oxidized lead never rubs off and only clean board arrives on your job.
The problemDelivery and unloading at the site can be a real problem, and lead board is heavy.
The A-fabco fixWe deliver all Florida orders with our own trucks, and our people unload and, in most cases, place the board right in the work area.
The problemDifferent lead thicknesses on one job cause installation mistakes when every board looks the same in the pile.
The A-fabco fixThe lead thickness is stamped on the face of every board and color coded on the edges, matching the color-coded drawings we supply for multiple-thickness jobs.
The problemLead overhanging the panel edge arrives bent or damaged.
The A-fabco fixSeparate 2″-wide lead batten strips. More flexibility, less time on joints and wraps, and they are non-directional.
The problemSolvent-based adhesives leave VOCs and formaldehyde fumes that build up in drywall storage and installation areas.
The A-fabco fixOur process bonds the lead with a special water-dispersed contact cement. No VOCs, no noxious fumes.
All of these features come at competitive prices. Give us a call and let us prove that quality does not cost extra. It saves.

Lead-lined plywood

When the physicist orders more than 1/8″ of lead, we laminate the sheet lead to plywood instead of drywall for a rigid, installable panel. Same clean-board handling, same stamping, same batten strips.
